The Red Lightning Bolt of the Nationwide Women’s Strike from the Front and Rear

Mariusz Bryl

The essay discusses in turn: a history of the red lightning bolt as a symbol of the Nationwide Womens Strike in Poland; an intentional, authorial meaning of the sign as a universal warning symbol; its reception, related to the imparting of various meanings to the red lightning bolt. Particular emphasis has been placed upon an intertextual reading that, based on visual evidence, projects into the red red lightning bolt the Hitlerjugend rune. This subversive interpretation, according to the nature of intertextual relation, signifies the updating of precisely this, and not any other, meaning of the rune as a Nazi victory sign.
